Shannon Murphy, PT, MPT (Physical Therapist/Owner)

shannon murphy, owner, Body Sense PT

Shannon Murphy opened BodySense PT as its sole owner in June 2008. She holds a Masters degree in Physical Therapy (MPT) and has been working in outpatient rehabilitation for over twelve years. Her educational background includes multiple academic honors from Davidson College in Charlotte, NC; international exposure to PT & sports medicine during a semester at the University of Queensland in Australia; and placement in the top 10% of her graduating PT class from the University of MD, Baltimore. She is also a proud graduate of Leadership Washington County (Class XXII) and recently served on the Boonsboro Town Council Advisory Committee for potential Aquatic & Rec Center development.

Her professional experience has focused on outpatient orthopedics, neurology, and administration, including six years in clinical support roles before life as a PT. She worked in acute-care rehab for a year with Frederick Memorial Hospital before transitioning into an outpatient role with the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Germantown, MD.

During her tenure with NRH, Shannon developed specialty programs in aquatic and vestibular rehab, while refining manual skills in the treatment of complex spine and joint disorders. She continues to train extensively in manual medicine and biomechanics through post-professional education. In 2010, she completed a rigorous course series and certification in myofascial trigger point (MTrP) dry needling with Myopain Seminars in Bethesda, MD. This training has added a new dimension to her treatment of many conditions, including chronic pain disorders and athletic injuries. As an eclectic practitioner, she also draws on training in osteopathic manual medicine, neurodynamics, cognitive pain science, and sports medicine. Additionally, Shannon has completed training with the Postural Restoration Institute, which looks at principles of patterned asymmetry in the ways in which we posture ourselves and complete functional movements. Along with PRI, her personal interests in distance running, yoga/pilates, and CrossFit-style fitness equips Shannon with a nuanced approach to corrective exercise. Regardless of age, she works to a creative and holistic approach to each patient’s treatment.

Jason McElroy, PT, DPT (Physical Therapist)

jason mcelroy

Dr. McElroy joined our team in 2010. Like Shannon, Jason also graduated from the University of MD, Baltimore with his Masters in Physical Therapy in 1999. Upon moving to Washington County, Jason’s professional experience developed in treating patients with complex illnesses at Western Maryland Hospital Center, with developmental disabilities at Potomac Staff_JasonCenter, and with acute rehab needs at Washington County Hospital. In 2004, he pursued a new direction in outpatient care with Robinwood Orthopaedics, where he spent 7 years working with local orthopedic physicians to treat patients for a wide range of surgical and non-surgical conditions.

His interest in manual therapy and one-to-one patient care brought Jason to BodySense PT, where he has been working with Shannon to expand his therapeutic approach. In May 2012, Jason also completed two years of additional study to earn his Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Montana. In 2014, Dr. McElroy completed two levels of training in CranioSacral Therapy with the Upledger Institute which have bolstered his treatment options for cervical dysfunction and headache conditions.  Last year, he completed a program with the CranioFascial Academy of Therapists (CRAFTA) that complements his CranioSacral training and offers additional treatment approaches for conditions like TMD/TMJ dysfunction.  He is currently studying to certify in Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling with Myopain Seminars.
