Physical Therapist/Owner

e-mail: smurphy@bodysensept.com

Shannon Murphy opened BodySense PT as its sole owner and therapist in June 2008. While she wasn’t “looking” to open a practice, the opportunity manifested, and now the rest is history.

Shannon’s educational background includes graduating with honors from both Davidson College in 1999 (B.A. in Psychology) and the University of MD, Baltimore in 2002 (Master of Physical Therapy (MPT).

Her professional experience has focused on outpatient orthopedics, neurology, and entrepreneurship.  Shannon spent most of her early career at an outpatient extension of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Germantown.  During her tenure with NRH, she developed specialty programs in aquatic therapy, while refining manual skills in the treatment of complex spine and joint disorders.

Her continuing education has included extensive training in manual techniques and orthopedics, including certification in myofascial trigger point (MTrP) dry needling with Myopain Seminars in Bethesda, MD.  She has also completed training in Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) techniques, osteopathic/muscle energy techniques, cognitive pain science, neurodynamics, vestibular rehab, and multiple sports medicine topics that add to her wide skill set.  In recent years, Shannon has earned certifications in ASTYM® soft tissue therapy, Functional Movement Systems® Assessment (SFMA 1-2, FMS, Y-Balance), and LSVT-BIG therapy for Parkinson’s disease. She has also introduced both laser and negative pressure therapies to the clinic to assist with pain, tissue repair, and various forms of edema.

From a business perspective, Shannon has worked to expand the clinic, develop her ownership skills, and stay connected with the local Boonsboro community. She is a graduate of Leadership Washington County (Class XXII) and has orchestrated a variety of clinic and town-sponsored events.

Although she still enjoys patient care, Shannon’s primary focus is on leading the company and fostering a fun, holistic atmosphere at BodySensePT.

She filled roles in home health, skilled nursing, and outpatient settings across the country – and logged some serious miles with her husband in their RV. Once the pandemic hit in 2020, Kayla made her way back to WV and began to work locally. Now that she owns a more permanent home in the area, she is focused on honing her outpatient skills in a fulltime capacity.

Kayla is an efficient, critical thinker who brings a diverse background and easy nature to the table. She recently completed her ASTYM® certification and will be working on further training with Functional Movement Systems® & Myopain Seminars over the coming year.
